Future-facing addresses for a revolutionary navigation experience: Lynk & Co. adopts what3words into its European fleet
Lynk & Co, the global mobility brand, has today revealed that it will adopt innovative location technology what3words to the navigation systems of its European fleet. The partnership demonstrates a futuristic vision of mobility for today’s drivers, and the integration will revolutionise drivers’ experience of navigation - delivering on Lynk & Co’s promise to be a disruptive game changer.
This is part of Lynk & Co’s pledge to adopt the newest ideas of today that become the brilliant solutions of tomorrow, as it rolls out its full scale mobility membership scheme in Sweden, the Netherlands, Italy, France, Spain, Germany, and Belgium. The partnership with what3words comes ahead of an expected expansion by Lynk & Co. in the UK with the company planning to open in London early next year.
The automotive industry is fast developing and innovating in speech technology, with voice set to be the way we communicate with cars and smart devices of the future. However, around the globe, traditional addresses are often long and complex, which makes them difficult to enter into navigation systems. They are also sometimes imprecise, covering a large area and introducing ambiguity when a precise location is needed. Street names are often duplicated, for example there are 14 Church Roads in London alone, 367 Park Streets in California, and 521 George Streets in Australia, and many address searches typically drop pins in the centre of buildings.
what3words addresses eliminate these issues. Every 3 metre square has been given a unique combination of three random words: a what3words address. Now drivers can find, share and navigate to precise locations using three simple words – whether that’s the coolest new pop-up bar, or your friend’s apartment parking space. Because what3words addresses are much more accurate than street addresses, drivers of enabled vehicles will be able to navigate to the right destination, first time every time. For example, drivers could enter ///sorters.scored.stylists to seamlessly navigate to a precise car parking spot by the famous Stonehenge site in Salisbury. The technology is available in 54 languages to date, including French, German, and Swedish.
With market-leading voice accuracy, what3words addresses can be entered either by text or voice just like street addresses or points of interest – it’s the only addressing system designed specifically for voice input.
With Lynk & Co, it’s about more than just the car, and the business has worked to put sustainability at the core of its mission. The average car is only in use for 4% of the time and the rest of the time it’s parked. By using the innovative sharing platform, members can share resources and reduce the overall number of cars on the street. With a focus on growing its membership community (not selling cars), Lynk & Co’s business model encourages a more efficient use of mobility and the membership model itself encourages people to share vehicles.
“We see a future where people are moving seamlessly between mobility solutions. This smooth move requires a digital-first approach to addressing.” says, David Green, Chief Technology Officer at Lynk & Co. “Our collaboration with what3words is heading in exactly this direction; inputting incredibly accurate locations in a simple way opens an entire new world of experiences for our members. For this reason, we will further expand our cooperation with what3words in the future and develop new fields of application.”
Chris Sheldrick, Co-Founder and CEO of what3words adds , ‘The disruptive model that Lynk & Co is offering will switch up the automotive industry. As a generation, we are far more connected and mobile than ever before, and so a company that is built on these inherent values will speak to a young, digital generation. By adopting what3words, Lynk & Co will create a new way for users to effortlessly explore some of the most exciting cities in the world.’
what3words’ technology has been adopted by global car companies, logistics providers and mobility apps, including Mercedes-Benz, Tata Motors, Lotus, Addison Lee, Evri (formerly Hermes) and Cabify. The what3words app is free to download for both iOS and Android , or by browser , and works offline in multiple languages – making it ideal for use in areas with an unreliable data connection.
